Project Pruning the Root
Project PTR is an 18-month pilot project aimed at equipping criminal justice professionals in Barbados with the skills to address the root causes of offending behavior among youth aged 12-17. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated mental health challenges for Caribbean children, highlighting the urgent need for effective trauma- informed interventions. This project focuses on training probation staff, government industrial school personnel, and juvenile liaison officers in trauma recognition and intervention strategies. By addressing Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and providing targeted therapeutic services, the project seeks to reduce recidivism and support the holistic rehabilitation of youth in the criminal justice system. The comprehensive approach includes individual and group therapy, addiction treatment, and the integration of community-based support, ensuring sustainability through ongoing training and the potential establishment of a mental health court.
